La Dolce Vita: Nino Rota Film Music
18 Nov, 2009
JDIFF presents, in association with the National Concert Hall, La Dolce Vita: Nino Rota Film Music performed by the DIT Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Brophy.
From La Dolce Vita to The Godfather score, Oscar winning composer Nino Rota has written some of the most memorable film music of the last century and the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival, in association with the DIT Symphony Orchestra and the National Concert Hall, are delighted to present Irish audiences with a unique opportunity to hear some of Rota’s best-loved works.
Rota’s collaborations with celebrated directors such as Frederico Fellini, Luchino Visconti, Franco Zeffirelli and Francis Ford Coppola have created a cinematic soundscape of Italy and Italian American culture from the 1940s – 70s. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of La Dolce Vita, this enchanting event will present a selection of Rota’s most loved work, including: La Dolce Vita, The Godfather, La Strada, Fellini’s Waltz, The Leopard and Prova d’orchestra.
Grainne Humphreys, Festival Director said: “This event was inspired by the festival’s focus on creative partnerships – the JDIFF and DIT Symphony Orchestra are collaborating to celebrate another great creative partnership – that of Nino Rota and Frederico Fellini. We are really looking forward to what promises to be a wonderful film-inspired, music event.”
“DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama is delighted to be invited to participate in this concert. Our young musicians will have an enlightening and rewarding experience performing Nina Rota’s music. Film music is an important genre in the modern era and I am grateful to the JDIFF for presenting us with this opportunity.” - Dr William Halpin, Head of Orchestral Studies, DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama.
The DIT Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by one of Ireland’s leading conductors, David Brophy.
Taking place on the first Monday of the 2010 JDIFF (22nd February), the event is a chance for the festival to move into different spaces and highlights the dynamic relationship between music and film. To celebrate the event, La Dolce Vita, will also be screened during the 2010 film festival.
